At Lifestyle Lawns, we know that Kiwis like a real grass lawn – there’s nothing better than hanging out in your garden on a nice day after all! But Kiwis like to spend time with their family, save water, and keep their homes low maintenance, and all of that can be hard to do while maintaining a perfect lawn.
…Unless you have artificial grass!
Fake grass is the best of both worlds – you can have a pristine lawn without all of the maintenance, so you’ll have more time to spend with the family, and you’ll be saving on water too!
No matter which artificial grass is right for you, it will require a small amount of cleaning and maintenance but it’s significantly less than real grass, so don’t let that put you off! Artificial grass is very easy to look after, once you know how.
Do You Need To Water Artificial Grass?
All of our products are high-quality, and realistic-looking, with all the benefits of the latest and greatest in synthetic grass technology! They come with a 10 year warranty, because we know that it’s just that good, and we don’t want you to have to worry about your lawn for many years to come.
Of course, artificial grass doesn’t need to be watered to stay green like a natural lawn does, so artificial grass is a great switch for anyone wanting to conserve water. Basically, unless you have dogs using your lawn for toileting, watering your artificial grass isn’t a necessity. However, to get the most out of your artificial grass, there may be times you’d like to water it. Allow us to explain!
To remove garden waste
It’s a good idea to get in the habit of regularly removing any garden waste such as leaves and twigs that may end up on your lawn. You can do this with a rake, a leaf blower, or by hand, and this will help to prevent staining, and also to avoid weeds growing on top of your grass.
Once you’ve removed the larger pieces of waste, you may like to wash your lawn down with your hose, or a watering can, to remove smaller pieces of waste. When using your hose, avoid any jet-type settings that may push fibres down and make your lawn look flat.
If your lawn ends up looking a bit flat, a brush with a stiff bristled broom and a little bit of elbow grease will have it looking perky again!
Rinse off debris
Similarly, if you’re working, hosting or playing around your lawn, your artificial grass may accumulate debris. This could be food scraps, wood shavings, or anything else!
If you can, pick up any waste, and for smaller bits of debris, break out that hose again and give your artificial grass a rinse, this will help any small bits of dirt and particulates to drain through your artificial grass.
Prevent stains
You can prevent stains by keeping your lawn free of debris and never leaving rusty furniture on your artificial grass.
But, if you do notice a stain, it’s good if you can treat it as quickly as possible. Although artificial grass is stain resistant, if you do notice a stain or mark, it’ll be easier to remove it before the stain has dried or hardened.
For fresh spills on your artificial grass, soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Then the grass can be cleaned using a solution of warm water and an artificial grass cleaner or mild soap (if you’re unsure if your soap would be suitable, test it on an inconspicuous area first). Use a cloth, sponge, or soft-bristled brush (nothing with metal bristles) to scrub the stain gently and then rinse with clean water. Repeat if necessary.
If you run into any issues removing a stain, just sing out – we’ve removed our fair share of stains and know all the best tricks!
Keep cool in summer
With our CoolTouch™ technology, your grass will be cool as a cucumber, even on the hottest of days. Sometimes it might need a helping hand though!
If your lawn feels too hot for you to comfortably lay on over the summer, you might like to give it a quick spritz of water. This will help activate our cooling technology and get your lawn cool and comfy in no time at all.
Avoid smells
If you’ve got furry friends who use your lawn as a toilet, removing any solid waste regularly is essential to maintain your artificial grass and avoid nasty smells.
If you do notice any smells developing, which can happen if you haven’t had much rain recently, simply hose off the areas that smell, or the areas your dog likes to do their duties, and wash away any leftovers from your doggy’s number ones and twos.
Don’t overwater
You probably already know that our artificial grass has incredible high-flow drainage technology so that water drains away quickly and you aren’t left with puddles on your lawn. Artificial grass can handle a good soaking – so don’t worry if you’re due for lots of rain, and don’t be afraid to give it an occasional hose-down – if anything your artificial grass will thank you for it!
It is a good idea to check that there are no pooling issues on or around your lawn due to slumping or uneven terrain. Pooling water can harbour mould and bacteria, and that could cause harm to your family, and serious damage to your perfect artificial grass.
So, no, you don’t need to water your artificial grass, but you definitely can if you want to!
